I am happy that you are interested in my home island Santo Antão!
I am Ailton Silva, nature lover and enthusiastic hiker. I speak Portuguese, English, French and Kriol (my mother tongue). And I think I'm a lucky guy, because I was able to turn my passion and love for my home island into a profession!
I fulfilled my wish and have been a professional walking guide for over 15 years. I have successfully completed all available training in this field. This also includes a first aid course. Of course, I have a state licence as a hiking and tourist guide, as is also customary in some alpine countries.
I know just about every corner and every hike on Santo Antão. Would you like not only to get to know nature but also to take a look into a local cooking pot? No problem. I have partners all over Santo Antão who we are allowed to show up. By the way, the people here with all their personal stories and the special spirit of Santo Antão make life here even more beautiful. But what do I say.... Santo Antão, the natural jewel in the Atlantic
Santo Antão is definitely the jewel of the Cape Verde archipelago. As the second largest, northernmost and westernmost island at the same time Santo Antão is blessed with a potpourri of vegetation thanks to its relief and special location. The variously eroded volcanic mountain ranges, which come in a mosaic with traditional terraced cultivation, small sugar cane plantations and tiny villages offer the viewer fulfilling and fascinating panoramas again and again: the Garden of Eden in the Paúl Valley, crashing surf on the north coast, sublime and majestic mountain ranges in the dry south , black sandy beaches and many traditional cultural elements that are still untouched by the hectic world outside the Atlantic.
The originality of the landscape and the warmth of the people inspire visitors and make them fans of the island. Ambitious hikers will find their Eldorado here as well as those seeking for peace and those on a round a tour. Everything is possible, nothing is necessary. No stress - like everywhere on Cape Verde - is also the motto on Santo Antão. So there are always people along the way who are happy to have a chat with the strangers and also like to show their Morabeza, their hospitality. An invitation to home-grown and roasted coffee, a fine goat's cheese or a hearty and nourishing Catchupa guisod. And then, of course, a hand-distilled grogue.
